Better than quitting smoking or getting exercise for heart health……….

Eating protein is just as good as stopping smoking or getting exercise for heart health.

Seems hard to believe but eating foods rich in amino acids could be as good for your heart as stopping smoking or getting more exercise — according to new research from the University of East Anglia (UEA).

The study published this month uncovered information that might anger some vegetarians.

But people who eat amino acids found in meat and plant-based protein have lower blood pressure and arterial stiffness.

So you need both.

As we age we need more protein to replace cells and I find this to be a major problem with many geriatric patients.

The results of the study were huge.  Eating more protein was better at reducing risk factors for heart disease than lowering salt intake, exercise, alcohol use and smoking.

That’s a real eye opener.

Researchers used the twin index to gather the data.  Twins are great because you eliminate the genetic differences in people and have clearer results. TwinsUK — is the biggest UK adult twin registry of 12,000 twins which is used to study the genetic and environmental causes of age related disease.

The blood pressure and blood vessel thickness and stiffness were lower in the group with the highest amount of amino acids.

And get this. Lower blood pressure was associated with plant based protein but animal proteins reduced arterial stiffness.

I keep going back to my sixth grade nutrition teacher who said everything in moderation. Looks like you need your veggies, grains and animal protein.

 

Lead researcher Dr Amy Jennings said, “The really surprising thing that we found is that amino acid intake has as much of an effect on blood pressure as established lifestyle risk factors such as salt intake, physical activity and alcohol consumption.

For arterial stiffness, the association was similar to the magnitude of change previously associated with not smoking.

I’m going to call for reservations at my local steak house.

Prof Tim Spector from the department of Twin Research at King’s college London said: “The finding that eating certain meat and plant proteins are linked to healthier blood pressure is an exciting finding.”

I’ll say it’s exciting.

Now you don’t need to eat a whole cow just a 4 oz steak or fish will do or a glass of milk.

Summer is waning but it might not be too late to fire up the BBQ.
